The temporomandibular joint between your skull and your lower jaw is vulnerable to stress and can become inflamed. When this occurs, in a condition known as TMJ disorder, or TMJ, you can experience symptoms such as chronic pain, headaches, and difficulty opening your mouth or chewing. We can help by diagnosing the causes of the inflammation.
Because TMJ is caused by factors that place stress on your jaws and facial muscles, our diagnosis focusses on identifying these factors. We will look at your overall health, your eating habits, and whether you clench or grind your teeth at night. TMJ can also be caused by orthodontic issues such as misaligned teeth or uneven bite.
Once we have diagnosed your TMJ, we may provide advice on how to reduce your symptoms. In some cases, we may refer you to a specialist such as an orthodontist or physiotherapist for treatment.
